Welcomed with open arms into the local Hall of Fame, Belleville-born hockey star Derek Smith holds numerous accomplishments across both regional and professional levels of world hockey. Smith made his NHL debut with the Ottawa Senators after recording 142 points and ranking seventh overall in franchise history with the team’s AHL affiliate in Binghamton, where he helped capture the Calder Cup championship in 2011. He later joined the Calgary Flames, playing 94 NHL games, scoring his first goal, and earning recognition as third star of the game. Before retiring in 2017, Smith spent time in Switzerland’s KHL and returned to the AHL to close out his professional career. Returning home, Smith transitioned into coaching with the Wellington Dukes of the OJHL, first as assistant coach before becoming head coach in 2019. In 2023, he was named head coach and general manager of the Trenton Golden Hawks, where he continues to lead the franchise for the 2025–26 season. Sept. 13, 2025.
